Plumber in Downtown Barrie
Downtown has been rebuilt and renovated for a long time, so we always check what your plumbing is made of before we promise anything.

You might live above a shop, in a house a few streets back from Dunlop Street, or near the water. Wikipedia says downtown Barrie sits in a curved valley around the western edge of Kempenfelt Bay. That shape is the setting for everything below.
Buildings that have changed over the years
Wikipedia says a series of fires between 1870 and 1890 shaped downtown development. We do not know when your building went up, and we will not assume. The pipes in a place that has been altered several times can be a mix of materials.
So we look first. Our pipe repair and leak detection page covers copper, PEX, ABS and galvanized pipe. We show you what we find, explain what your options are and price the job before we start.
Know your shut-off before you need it
The City of Barrie says the internal shut-off valve belongs to the homeowner, and that it is typically in the basement or crawl space, often near the water heater, water softener or furnace. The City owns the water meter. If you rent or share a building, ask who looks after the valve. Then find it, and make sure it turns.
It is a ten-minute job that makes a leak much less frightening. If you cannot find it, tell us when you call and we will talk you through what to look for.
Water heaters and fixtures
Space can be tight downtown. When you ask about a new tank, we want to hear where it sits and how we would get to it. See water heater installation for what we repair and replace.
Faucets, toilets and showers are covered on faucet and fixture service. A renovated bathroom in an older building sometimes needs the pipes behind it checked at the same time. We will say so if we see it.
A lively street, and getting to you
Dunlop Street is the main downtown street. Tourism Barrie mentions its shopping and a 6 km waterfront trail, and Wikipedia says that since 2021 Open Air Dunlop temporarily closes the street to vehicles. If you are near it, tell us the side street or entrance to use.
Wikipedia says the ground near the centre of Barrie is generally flat, with slopes rising toward the north and south ends. That does not change the plumbing, but the landscape is part of what makes downtown what it is.
Drains that stop
For a blocked toilet, tub or sink, see blocked drain cleaning. A main line backing up is a different job, covered under sewer cleaning and repair.

Questions we get asked
My downtown building has been renovated several times. Can you still tell what the pipes are?
Usually, once we see them. Pipes in altered buildings are often a mix, and a visual check shows what is copper, PEX, ABS or galvanized. We explain what we find and price any repair before starting. Where pipe is hidden behind a wall, we tell you what we can and cannot confirm.
I rent an apartment near Dunlop Street. Who should I call first about a leak?
Tell your landlord or property manager, because they decide who handles repairs. If you are the one with authority to book plumbing, call us. In either case, ask where the main shut-off is and close it if water is spreading. We can explain the problem to whoever pays.
Who owns the water shut-off valve in a house?
The City of Barrie says the internal shut-off valve belongs to the homeowner, while the water meter is City-owned. The City says the valve is typically in the basement or crawl space. In a shared building, ask your landlord or condo board who looks after it. Either way, test the valve once so you know it still turns.
Can you work in a small basement or utility closet?
Often we can, but we need to see it. Tell us on the phone how big the space is, how a tank would get in and where the old one sits. Tight spaces affect the time and sometimes the options, so we explain that before we give you a price.
Will you need parking on a street with events or closures?
Tell us when you call if a street is closed or busy. Since 2021, the City has run Open Air Dunlop, which temporarily closes Dunlop Street to vehicles. Give us a side street or rear entrance if there is one, and we will plan our arrival around it.
Why is the base of my water heater rusting?
Rust at the base can come from a leaking fitting, condensation or the tank itself failing, and only a look tells which. Do not rely on a tank that is leaking from the shell. Call us, and we will tell you whether it is a repair or time to replace.
I want a new shower in an older downtown bathroom. What should I expect?
Expect a conversation about what is behind the walls first. Drain position, supply pipe material and available height all affect what is possible. We look, explain your options in plain words and price them before work starts. We also keep the workspace clean.
