White tank water heater in a tidy basement corner with copper and PEX pipes connected above it

Your water heater works quietly for years, so when it stops you notice at once. We install and repair water heaters and water tanks in Barrie homes. Our licensed and insured plumbers look at what you have, tell you what is wrong, lay out your options and give you the price before any work starts.

When the shower runs cold

Cold water at the tap is usually one of a few things: a part that has worn out, a tank that has reached the end of its working life, or a supply problem somewhere else in the house. We look first, so you are not paying for a whole new heater when a repair would do.

If a repair makes sense, we tell you so. If the tank is old and a repair would only buy a short stretch of time, we say that too, and let you decide.

A tank that is leaking

Water on the floor under your heater should not be left to wait. Shut off the cold supply to the tank if you can reach it, then call us. A leak at a pipe connection or valve can often be repaired. Water seeping from the tank itself generally means the tank is finished, and replacement is the sensible route.

What a replacement visit looks like

Before we touch anything we agree the plan with you: the new heater, where it goes and what it will cost. Then we shut off the water, drain and disconnect the old unit, set the new one in place, reconnect the plumbing and check it over for leaks before we leave.

We keep our tools in one spot and clean up afterwards. Your basement or utility room should look the way we found it, minus the old heater.

Water tanks and water heater tanks

Some homes have a separate water tank as well as a heater, and we install and repair those too. If you are not sure which part of your setup is giving trouble, describe it on the phone and we will work out what to look at.

Adding a water softener

If hard water is leaving scale on your fixtures, we install water softeners. A softener sits on your main water line, so we often fit it at the same visit as a new heater. That saves you a second appointment and lets us plan the plumbing in one go.

Questions we get asked

How do I decide between repairing and replacing my water heater?

Think about three things: how old the heater is, what failed, and what the repair would cost next to a new unit. A worn valve or part on a sound tank is worth repairing. A leaking tank is not. We explain both routes with prices, then you choose.

Will I be without hot water during a replacement?

Yes, for part of the visit, because the old heater has to come out and the new one has to fill and heat. How long that takes depends on your setup: where the heater sits, how the pipes connect and whether anything needs altering. We tell you what to expect when you call.

What should I clear before the plumber arrives?

Move boxes, laundry baskets and storage away from the heater so we have a clear path and room to work. Know where your main water shut-off is, and tell us about anything odd you have noticed, such as noises or damp spots. A clear floor also keeps your things clean.

My heater is rented. Can you replace it?

Check your rental agreement first. The company that owns the heater usually decides who can repair or remove it, and ending the contract early may carry terms. If you own the tank, the question does not arise. Call us with what you know and we will talk through your choices.

How do I choose the right size of water heater?

The size depends on how many people live in your home, how many bathrooms run at once, the space you have and the fuel the heater uses. A tank that is too small runs out mid-shower. We ask a few questions about your household and recommend a size.

Where do I shut the water off to the heater in an emergency?

Look for a valve on the cold water pipe feeding the top of the tank and turn it clockwise until it stops. If you cannot find it or it will not move, shut the home's main valve, which is often in the basement. Then call us.

What does a water softener need to be installed?

A softener needs space near your main water line, a nearby drain for its waste water, and an electrical outlet. It is plumbed in ahead of the water heater so the heater gets softened water. We check these things at your home before we price the job.

What is the difference between a water heater and a water tank?

A water heater heats the water. A water tank, the way some homeowners use the word, may simply store it, and the two can be separate parts of one system. Either can fail or leak. We install and repair both, and sort out which one you have.
